The visitor center that serves as a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula for travelers from Seattle will get an overhaul next month
A new, larger portable structure at the junction of state Routes 19 and 104 will cost $85,000 and sport a “log cabin” facade, pitched roof and canopy.
It will replace a small construction trailer that has occupied the space for the past decade.
County officials said the upgrade, due to be in place by July 16, is the first step in a larger effort to build a permanent, expanded visitor center at the highway junction.
In addition to a building that will be quadruple the size of the current one, the parking lot will be paved with crushed rock, oak trees will be planted and rotting logs in the lot will be replaced with concrete tire stops.
