JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Party on with Cinco de Mayo revelry

MAY DAY, THE first of May, is finally here with its promise of warmer, sunnier weather.

And I am here, warmer and sunnier, with a promise that you will find live music at many places across the Peninsula.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, Jerry’s country jam features Rusty and Duke from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the Soul Ducks bring on their Motown, rockabilly and danceable rhythm and blues from 8 p.m. until midnight.

■ Today at Cafe New Day, 102 W. Front St., Dan Maguire gives a concert of his original songs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave, Mick and Barry play classic rock and country from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, Serendipity hosts a country jam from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by Serendipity with special guests Chuck Grall and Gene Hancock from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, join the country jam from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ On Friday, Oven Spoonful, 110 E. First St., hosts the cafe’s second-anniversary party with harpist John Manno through the afternoon and Sarah Shea singing from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m.

Dinner specials, wine, beer and espresso will be served, and a drawing for a $100 Oven Spoonful gift certificate will be held. The cafe can be reached at 360-457-OVEN (6836).

■ On Saturday at Easy Street Coffee and Tea House, 128 W. First St., Alex Marusyk with Daniel and Tiffany Mathre, singers-songwriters, play original music from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 suggested donation.

■ On Tuesday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally’s Boys playing ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Joyce

■ Today, the Salt Creek Saloon and Grill, 53821 state Highway 112, begins its grand opening weekend with a music jam from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

On Saturday, Joy in Mudville with Jason Mogi, Paul Stehr-Green and Colin Leahy gets you dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

■ On Sunday at the Crescent Lions, state Highway 112 and Holly Hill Road, Dave and Rosalie Secord with Barbara Priebe on washtub bass play from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with your Sunday morning pancakes.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Cort Armstrong and Jim Faddis entertain from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Friday, Howly Slim and Sandy Summers play original ballads from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Rufus and his Blue Hares, rhythm and blues and funk, play from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Sarah Shea and Chez Jazz perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, Bill Volmut showcases original tunes and covers from the 1960s and ’70s from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Friday at The Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., the Discovery Bay Pirates play Irish pub songs and sea chanteys from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Denny Secord Jr. and Haywire play country and classic rock in an Irrigation Festival Fund the Float benefit. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets for $25 are available at the Sequim Chamber of Commerce, 1192 E. Washington St., and RE/MAX Fifth Avenue, 560 N. Fifth Ave.

■ On Friday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Steve Grandinetti performs popular standards from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Sarah Shea and Al Harris jazz it up from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., High Country performs for your dancing pleasure from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Monday at Blondie’s Plate, 134 S. Second Ave., Three Too Many plays pop, rock and country from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, the Hayshakers play from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, the Julie Duke Band plays funky blues and classic rock from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday in Club Seven, dance to the high-energy Top 40 dance band Sway from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Friday, the Rainforest Bar features Buck Ellard playing easy country, blues and classics from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Julie Dukes and Van Bergan stay over for an intimate evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Mick and Barry play classic rock and country blues from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Zoogs Caveman Cookin’, 141 Chimacum Road, Andy Koch & the Badd Dog Blues Society play Cinco de Mayo tunes from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 4 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ On Friday, Sirens, 823 Water St., features the Irish band Lynched playing its unique folk-punk numbers at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, listen and dance to Lone Madrone’s foot-stompin’ country rock at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Sunday, North Carolina-based band Bombadil plays its version of vintage pop and indie rock at 8 p.m. No cover.

■ On Friday at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St., big bands gather for a concert and dance (1930s-’50s) at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation of $5.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., Brother Townsend plays original Americana from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Later, Matney Cook plays classic honky-tonk, roots rock and bluesy jams from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Friday at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., the Blue Holiday Band has a smooth, fun, jazzy sound from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, Lady Grace performs blues/acoustic/hip-hop from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Monday, it’s a Cinco de Mayo party with the mariachi band Lobo del Mar from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, enjoy the jazz of the Skip Morris Trio from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., the Skip Morris Quartet with vocalist Carla Main perform mostly straight-ahead jazz from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Hilltop Tavern, 2510 W. Sims Way, Three Chords and the Truth plays vintage country and Western, country swing, waltz, honky-tonk and rockabilly tunes for dancing from 8 p.m. to closing.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., the Barefoot Band with acoustic guitar plays Saturday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. No cover; for ages 21 and older.

■ On Monday at La Isla Family Mexican Restaurant, 1145 Water St., Tres Piedras strolls its way past your dinner table with Cinco de Mayo music from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ Every Monday, Trevor Hanson plays guitar at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at Highway 20 Road House, 2125 Sims Way, play along with or watch Ukuleles Unite! from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

High notes

■ On Saturday at Nash’s Organic Produce, 1865 E. Anderson Road, Sequim, the Jelly Rollers perform blues, roots and Americana from 7:30 p.m. during the annual Spring Barn Dance.

Bring a dish for potluck at 6 p.m. $10 for adults; 16 and younger admitted free.

■ On Saturday at the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road, Port Angeles, the Power House Band makes the music and Carol Piening calls for the 7 p.m. dance.

■ On Sunday, Mark Pearson of the Brothers Four performs in a “Share the Bounty” benefit in the Chimacum High School auditorium, 91 West Valley Road, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

All proceeds go to Jefferson County-area food programs.

The suggested donation is $15.
