Kennel containing puppies hit by vehicle on highway

SEQUIM — A kennel containing puppies fell out of a truck and was hit by another vehicle on U.S. Highway 101 west of Sequim, the State Patrol said.

Trooper Katherine Weatherwax said troopers responded at 11 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a large homemade kennel after it was struck by a vehicle in the eastbound lane on the highway by Kirk Road.

She said several malamute mix puppies were inside. One was found dead due to injuries from the collision and two were rescued from the nearby woods. Two additional puppies remained unaccounted for in the area, Weatherwax said.

Port Angeles- and Bremerton-area troopers transported two puppies to an emergency veterinarian service in Poulsbo with minor injuries, Weatherwax said.

The dogs’ owners were moving from Port Gamble, and their kennel was being held with multiple other items in their truck’s bed, Weatherwax said. They were unaware it had fallen out until later, she said.

No criminal charges were filed, she said.

No injuries to humans were reported.

The dogs’ owners will be responsible for the veterinarian charges, Weatherwax said.
