Land trust gets bequest to preserve longtime Dungeness Valley farm

Peninsula Daily News

SEQUIM — Jane’s Farm, a 50-acre site near the intersection of Kitchen-Dick Road and Old Olympic Highway, has been permanently protected through a conservation easement, the North Olympic Land Trust announced.

The late Jane Willits also left the land trust $270,000, according to Brad Tesreau, land trust administrative assistant, who called it “a significant bequest, the largest the land trust has received.”

When Willits — sister of John Willits, land trust board member — died in January, she left a legacy gift of farmland, and the details were finalized Nov. 5 with her family, Tesreau said.

The conservation easement means that the land will forever remain agricultural and prime waterfowl habitat, Tesreau said.

Since its inception in 1990, the land trust has conserved 2,700 acres land across the North Olympic Peninsula, according to information provided by the nonprofit organization.

North Olympic Land Trust is accredited by the Land Trust Alliance and was honored by Sunset magazine through its 2012 Environmental Awards.
