LAPUSH — The Quileute tribe will celebrate the grand opening of a new community center later this month with a traditional totem pole raising and other cultural celebrations.
The $4.6 million A-Ka-Lat Center — a complex containing a basketball court, fitness room, cultural classroom, kitchen and salmon pit — will open April 27 with a public ceremony.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the building located just off state Highway 110 on Ravens Crest Road.
“A-Ka-Lat” means “at the top of the rock” and recognizes the Quileutes’ sacred James Island that looms over LaPush.
