LaPush: Surfing, kayaking event to be held this weekend

LAPUSH — First Beach will be transformed into a surfers and kayakers paradise this weekend during the inaugural Surfing and Traditions sporting event.

The event features a free surf and kayak camp for West End youth between the ages of 10 and 18 on Friday, and an open board and kayak surf competition Saturday at First Beach.

“This is going to be a fun and exciting event for the kids, the surfers and for spectators,” said Quileute Tribal Youth Advocate Sharon Penn.

Penn said Friday’s surf camp will teach youth about water safety and provide one-on-one surfing and kayaking instruction from professionals.

“The day will begin with classroom instruction including films and verbal instructions on staying safe in the ocean,” she said.

“Then the kids will head to the beach.”

Penn said about 40 children have been invited to participate in the clinic, which includes camping on First Beach on Friday night.

Traditional teachings

She said after a day splashing in the Pacific Ocean children will be treated to smoked salmon and fry bread and learn about traditional Quileute drumming and dancing.

The event’s focus on Saturday will shift to a competition for novice and avid surfers and kayakers throughout the Northwest.
