Last forum set Tuesday on Port Angeles High School design

PORT ANGELES — Staff, students and members of the public are invited to a community forum to talk about the design of a new Port Angeles High School.

The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library at the high school, 304 E. Park Ave.

Tours of the school will precede the forum. They will begin at 5:30 p.m., starting near the high school main office entrance off Park Avenue.

The School Board plans to place a bond measure on the February special election ballot for construction of a new high school on the 39.7-acre campus.

To place a measure on the ballot, the board must approve a resolution by Dec. 26.

If voters approve the bond measure, the new school likely would open for the 2018-19 school year.

The Oct. 14 forum will be the third communitywide forum conducted by the school district and McGranahan Architects of Tacoma. It is the last scheduled.

Architect Chris Lilley will report on feedback received at the Sept. 16 forum.

“The forum will allow us to share comments received from the critical questions, our overall observations from the site planning exercise, and we’ll share our initial take on the site design,” he said.

“We’ll be looking at how we propose to organize the school on the site, and why, to solicit community feedback.”

During the September forum, Lilley guided about 45 participants through a series of questions and a planning exercise to come up with a proposed site plan.

Small groups of four to six engaged in discussion “designed to allow community members to share their thoughts on what makes Port Angeles High School special today,” Lilley said, “and what will make a new Port Angeles High School the right school for this community for generations to come.”
