SEQUIM – If the Sequim Cinema story were a movie plot, it would twist, turn and stay shrouded in mystery.
The coming-soon sign bearing the Sun Basin Theatres’ name appeared a few years back, near the intersection of Rhodefer Road and East Washington Street.
A multiplex – owned by the same company that runs the Deer Park and Lincoln theaters in Port Angeles – was expected to be built in that open field by the close of 2006.
This whetted would-be moviegoers’ hunger for something new to do in Sequim on a Saturday night.
Then, earlier this year, the suspense rose a bit when a blacktop platform appeared on the property.
It looked a lot like a launch pad.
The $6 million-plus, 30,000-square-foot multiplex will have 10 screens plus a party room, its architect Bill Lindberg said back in February.
All told, the place will be big enough to hold nearly 1,200 moviegoers.
Construction was to start last spring and take 10 to 12 months.
Film lovers could look forward to a late 2007 or early 2008 premiere.
