PORT ANGELES — Tree-cutting in Lincoln Park will begin this morning, and mark the beginning of a two-week closure of the city park.
Some 38 trees out of 74 at Lincoln Park that are obstructing a Fairchild International Airport flight path will be cut beginning today, according to a press release issued Thursday by the City of Port Angeles.
The Port Angeles City Council approved the immediate removal of 38 trees Monday after Port of Port Angeles commissioners adopted a resolution June 30 declaring encroachment of trees into the airport’s glide path an emergency because it prevents fixed wing life line flights from leaving Port Angeles at night.
The Federal Aviation Administration had issued the Port of Port Angeles a notice June 15 imposing the restriction that instrument approaches to night landings on Runway 26 at the airport would no longer be allowed because of the obstructing trees in the park.
The park is across South L Street from the airport.
The city will negotiate with the port on the remaining 36 the port says need to be cut, the council decided Monday.
