There was nothing that 23-year-old logger Shain Keys could have done to prevent his death Tuesday morning, a state investigator said Wednesday.
The 10-inch hemlock tree that fell on his back, crushing him into the ground, fell on its own, probably caused by the roots giving way in the heat, said Rick White, an industrial accident investigator with the Department of Labor and Industries.
“He was doing a wonderful job,” White said of Keys.
“You can tell how good one is doing by looking at the stumps. . . Every one of his stumps looked perfect.”
White visited the site of Keys’ death Tuesday morning, a few hours after the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department pronounced him dead.
Keys was cutting timber for his brother-in-law’s company, Abrahams Cutting Inc., owned by Aaron Abrahams.
