PORT TOWNSEND — A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred just off the coast of Jefferson County, shaking the Puget Sound region.
The earthquake struck just after 7 p.m. Sunday with its epicenter just beneath Scow Bay between Indian and Marrowstone islands, just east of Port Hadlock, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was felt in the Seattle area as well as Victoria, British Columbia, according to USGS.
No major damage was reported. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported no risk of tsunami.
According to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, the earthquake was not large enough to meet the threshold for an emergency notification from USGS’ ShakeAlert system, which sends warning messages to area phones.
The earthquake comes just less than two weeks before the Great Washington Shakeout, a statewide earthquake preparedness drill scheduled for 10:19 a.m. on Oct. 19.
The state and both Clallam and Jefferson counties have emergency preparedness plans available on their websites with recommendations on how to prepare for disasters such as major earthquakes or tsunamis.
