NEAH BAY — Being deemed a young, emerging American leader has landed Makah Tribal Councilman Micah McCarty a ticket to Europe.
McCarty, 35, will join 56 other chosen leaders in the fields of government, business, media, military and nonprofit sector for a three-week visit to Europe as part of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program.
The 24-year-old program is aimed at strengthening European-American relations by educating young leaders from both continents about current political, economic and social issues.
Each of the fellows will have one-on-one talks with European leaders that are geared toward their professional fields.
Tribal interests
McCarty’s talks will deal with tribal interests in the areas of eco-terrorism, natural resources, sustainable development, environmental education and cultural exchange.
McCarty said he is one of only a handful of Native Americans ever to be chosen as a fellow, and that he looks forward sharing the Native perspective on global affairs with European leaders.
McCarty will meet with leaders in the capital cities of Berlin, Rome, Bratislava, Slovakia, and Brussels, Belgium.
