PORT ANGELES — A silent auction by Port Angeles downtown merchants for almost $3,000 in merchandise, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy, has been extended into this week.
The auction will now run until 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6.
It had been scheduled to end at 2 p.m. Friday.
Barbara Frederick, executive director of the Port Angeles Downtown Association, which is sponsoring the auction, said the decision to extend was made after heavy rain dampened downtown traffic on Friday — just as the bidding was starting to pick up momentum.
Each participating Port Angeles downtown business is advertising its donated auction item in a window or entrance door, with the item and bid sheet inside.
Winning bidders will be contacted by phone by a Red Cross representative on Friday, Dec. 7, who will collect the money and issue receipts so the merchandise can be picked up from the businesses.
The downtown association held similar auctions for victims of the great 2004 tsunami in south Asia, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
Items up for bid include gift certificates, clothes, gift items, Port Angeles Symphony tickets and a certificate for a free quarter-page advertisement in the Peninsula Daily News.
