PORT ANGELES — A 19-year old man committed suicide early Sunday by jumping from the new Eighth Street bridge over Valley Creek, police confirmed today.
Police Chief Terry Gallagher said a friend of the man, who he didn’t identify, had called police at about 3:52 a.m. to say the man was considering jumping.
“The officers attempted to engage [the man] in conversation but as soon as he saw them he jumped over,” Gallagher said.
He said that he wasn’t aware of the man giving any indication as to why he was jumping.
It is the first reported jump off either of the new Eighth Street bridges, which were opened in March.
