Man collapses at Fort Worden, is airlifted to Seattle hospital

PORT TOWNSEND — A 64-year-old Lacey man was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after he collapsed on the beach at Fort Worden State Park.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue personnel who were involved in a nearby training session on a boat in Port Townsend Bay helped the man after he collapsed at about 11:20 a.m. Friday.

He was not identified by a fire department spokesman because of privacy concerns.

The man was walking on the beach with a group of friends and family celebrating his 43rd wedding anniversary when he collapsed, according to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman Bill Beezley.

Deputy Chief Brian Tracer was nearby and was accompanied by three medics, Beezley said.

Tracer dropped one of the medics on the beach and called for backup, Beezley said.

The man was given CPR and was taken to the parade grounds to be picked up by a helicopter and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
