OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – A Port Angeles man who died in Lake Mills on Memorial Day saved his friend’s life, said Olympic National Park officials.
Donald R. Olson, 48, of Port Angeles, didn’t think his capsized canoe would hold both him and his canoeing companion, park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said in a press release.
So, he donned a life preserver and slid into the frigid water to save Elizabeth Meyers, 42, of Olympia.
Olson was found dead by Olympic National Park rangers as he floated in the water in a life jacket.
The cause of death has not been determined.
Deborah Kelly, Clallam County prosecuting attorney and coroner, said Tuesday: “We’ll probably be putting it down as drowning after hypothermia.”
