FORKS – Sunday night, the night that Stephen G. Pettibone died, he had been released from the Forks jail after serving a 29-day sentence to resolve seven misdemeanor charges.
His friend and co-worker, Adam Robinson of Forks, picked him up from jail and gave him a ride home.
“We really haven’t been all that great of friends lately,” Robinson said.
“Stephen drank – I haven’t for over 15 months.”
Robinson said Tuesday that things had been going downhill for Pettibone since he and his wife separated in February, and since she filed for divorce in April.
But Robinson said that until Pettibone and his wife started having problems, he was a compassionate man, and one who appreciated Forks for everything it had to offer.
“He had a big heart, he cared and you knew,” Robinson said.
“He would do anything for you he could.”
According to court records, Pettibone had been arrested six times since he and his wife separated, and at least once, he went to her house and acted violently, kicking the back door.
He had been cited or charged 13 times between 1997 and 2002, but only once between 2002 and 2007.
