DABOB BAY – A Des Moines man who was shrimping with his father on Dabob Bay over the weekend severed a finger and thumb after they were stuck in a mechanical winch.
While Derek Adachi, 45, struggled to free himself, he knocked himself and his father, Seiichi Adachi, 83, of Sea-Tac, off their boat and into the water, where they nearly drowned, said Jefferson County Undersheriff Tim Perry.
The two men, who were wearing life preservers, floated in the cold water for about 15 minutes before two Quilcene men came to their rescue.
The glove Derek Adachi was wearing – still containing his middle finger and thumb – was recovered from the winch.
Adachi was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was discharged, but it’s unclear if his digits were able to be reattached.
