Man who ran into fire to try to save woman faces big medical bills

PORT TOWNSEND — Being a good Samaritan doesn’t come with medical benefits, and Harborview Medical Center’s burn unit isn’t cheap.

Gaining medical insurance is one of the reasons why Greg Bryant took a job at Edensaw Woods, the Port Townsend specialty wood company, two weeks ago.

He wanted to set himself up for the future. He wanted a job with benefits, a job with health coverage.

“He was looking for a solid job with benefits, and he was looking toward his future.” said Todd Minnhain of Edensaw.

“When he wanted to apply [for a job] with that attitude, I said: ‘You bet.'”

After only one week of Edensaw employment, Bryant was out making deliveries May 21 when he arrived at the corner of West Valley and Egg and I roads south of Chimacum.

He saw the house of Bob and Sandra Bundy on fire.

“We were driving to Kingston on a delivery,” he recalled at his home on Wednesday.

“I saw it was a house fire and I called 9-1-1.”

Bryant said he drove up to the fire, got out of the truck and ran up to the house on foot — while still on the phone to the dispatch operator.

“I was describing the scene to them,” he said.

“Then I heard moans coming from inside the house.

“I hung up the phone and I went in.”
