Medical condition caused crash on Highway 101, State Patrol says

BLYN — A 56-year-old Sequim woman was listed Thursday in serious condition with an undisclosed medical condition at a Seattle hospital after a crash on U.S. Highway 101 at Chicken Coop Road late Wednesday.

Lorri Ann Sumida’s medical condition is cited by the State Patrol as the cause of the crash.

Harborview Medical Center personnel said Thursday that she is improving in the intensive-care unit.

Sumida was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 101 near the Clallam-Jefferson County line when her 2003 Chevrolet Suburban drifted to the right, crossed Chicken Coop Road where it intersects with the highway and drove up an embankment, the State Patrol said.

Her car then crossed the highway and came to rest in the westbound ditch at Old Gardiner Road.

Clallam County Fire District No. 3 medics treated her after they arrived shortly before 5 p.m. and then took her to the helipad at Olympic Medical Center’s Sequim campus on North Fifth Avenue.

She was then airlifted to Harborview.

The car was destroyed and was towed away, the State Patrol said.
