MORE BANG THIS WEEKEND: Fourth of July may be over but the fun goes on across Peninsula

The fireworks, concerts, parades and picnics of the Fourth of July are over — but in Forks, Sequim, Port Townsend and Brinnon, the celebration just keeps on going through the Independence Day weekend.

Forks

The annual Forks Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration, which began Wednesday, will go on through Sunday, with a fun run, a horseshoe tournament, a Frog Jump and West End Thunder drag races as highlights.

Today’s (Friday’s) Fourth of July Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. at the parking lot at 240 S. Forks Ave., with registration for the 5K and 10K runs starting at 8 a.m. Entry is $25, and proceeds will benefit a charity.

An arts, photos and crafts show will be open from noon to 5 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church, 251 Blackberry Ave.

A bean bag toss offering both fun and the opportunity to contribute to charity is planned at 5 p.m. at Tillicum Park.

Half of the proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions.

Entries to the bag toss are $20 each.

From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight (Friday), merchants throughout Forks will stay open late and offer special sales during Moonlight Madness, sponsored by the West End Business & Professional Association.

On Saturday, a horseshoe tournament will begin at 9 p.m. at Tillicum Park, with registration opening at 8 a.m.

The first day of the weekend’s West End Thunder drag races will roar at Forks Municipal Airport just off U.S. Highway 101 on Saturday.

Between 90 and 100 cars are expected to race this weekend. Gates open at 9 a.m. Racing begins at 10 a.m. and goes on until 5 p.m.

Spectator admission will be $10 per person for those 13 and older.

Show car and motorcycle entries pay $15 daily. The entry fee for cars in the races is $35.

The arts and crafts show will continue Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday will be Kiddies Play Day, sponsored by the Forks Lions Club, at Tillicum Park.

That will be followed at the park by a Frog Jump at 4 p.m.

At 6 p.m. will be a cribbage tournament at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 110 S. Spartan Ave. Entry fee is $6.

During the day, window decoration viewing is sponsored by the West End Business and Professional Association.

On Sunday will be the second day of West End Thunder drag races, with gates opening at 9 a.m. and races starting at 10 a.m.

Sequim

Sequim is celebrating not only the Fourth of July but also its centennial year.

The town was incorporated Oct. 31, 1913, and has been marking that date with events all year, including Independence Day weekend.

After a raft of events Thursday, the city of Sequim will shut down Sequim Avenue at Washington Street for “The Street Dance of the Century” from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today (Friday).

That will be preceded by the second of the weekend’s community photos.

It will be at 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street — where a color decal of the city’s logo was placed earlier this week. All city residents are urged to pose for the photograph.

Details about purchasing copies of the photograph and one taken during the Old Fashioned Community Picnic on Thursday, will be available soon, the city said.

The photographs will be included in a centennial time capsule, which will be opened in the year 2063.

The street party in downtown Sequim will feature retro rock ‘n’ roll band Magic Bus with a special guest, the Guy Johnson Band.

Food vendors will offer victuals, and those 21 or older are invited to purchase alcoholic beverages at a beer and wine garden.

The dance is presented by Wilder Auto, and co-sponsored by First Federal, Castell Insurance, Kitsap Bank and Olympic Ambulance.

Before the street dance, KSQM 91.5 FM will host an Independence Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today (Friday) at its station at 577 W. Washington St.

The all-volunteer community radio station plans live music and a fire district display.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. will be the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Sequim. See Weekend story, accessed from the home page.

On Saturday, the Centennial Golf Scramble will start at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course, 1965 Woodcock Road.

The will be two-person teams, with the entry fee $80 per person.

The fee includes lunch and tournament prizes.

For more information, contact Garrett Smithson at the Cedars at Dungeness, ggsmithon@7cedarsresort.com or 360-683-6344.

Port Townsend, Brinnon

The 133D Washington Army National Guard’s Patriot Brass Band will perform at Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island at 7 p.m. today (Friday) and at Brinnon’s Dosewallips State Park at noon Saturday.

Admission is free.

A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to both performances.

The band will play a wide variety of music — from Bach to Lady Gaga.

The concerts are presented in partnership with the 133D Washington Army National Guard Band and Washington State Parks.
