SHINE — More delays are scheduled on the Hood Canal Bridge next week — and other, unscheduled disruptions of traffic are likely.
Daytime closures of the bridge are scheduled Monday through Thursday. Nighttime test openings — which are not announced in advance — are to resume next week as well.
That’s in addition to closures of the bridge to permit draw span openings for marine traffic. Those closures also are given no advance notice.
The state Department of Transportation has scheduled daytime closures at:
• 9 a.m. Monday.
• 9 a.m. Tuesday.
• 11 a.m. Wednesday.
• 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
No daytime opening is scheduled for today, Saturday, Sunday or next Friday, Jan. 29.
The scheduled daytime closures are for 40 minutes, but the delay for travelers can extend up to 90 minutes because of backed up traffic.
A different type of delay, nighttime test openings of the draw span, which had been canceled the last couple of weeks, resume, Monday.
These 90-minute delays can be anytime from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. any weeknight and will continue through late February. They are not announced in advance.
The state Department of Transportation and Kiewit-General Construction Co. of Poulsbo are doing retrofit and ballasting work on the west side of the bridge as part of a nearly completed $500 million project to repair the floating bridge and replace its eastern half.
The scheduled daytime openings allow testing of the ballast in pontoons to make sure the new east side and retrofitted west side work together. The tests are timed to coincide with slack tides.
Scheduled closures are listed online at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.
