Moviemakers need help to bring rain to North Olympic Peninsula

PORT TOWNSEND — It wasn’t a dark and stormy night as “Ring” production wrapped up Friday night.

The multimillion-dollar DreamWorks SKG film had to simulate rain with long sprinkler pipes hauled high above the Washington State Ferries dock where all the filming took place.

Sun blessed the Quimper Peninsula, but forced production crews to put up light screens to diffuse the bright rays.

Actors Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson looked like any other web-footed Washingtonians as director Gore Verbinski shot a scene under the rainmakers.

Friday morning’s windy weather actually helped the film crew, however, because it canceled the Port Townsend-Keystone runs for most of the morning, allowing filming without interruption.

“The wind helped because we couldn’t shoot if the ferry was pulling in,” said publicist Alex Worman. “We’re actually ahead of schedule because of the wind.”

The rain — or lack of it, that is — was another matter.

Two tanker trucks pumped thousands of gallons of water onto actors, director, production crew and others to simulate the stormy weather of the previous days.

The film crew pulled up stakes this weekend.
