PENINSULA: Don’t forget! Taxes due today
Today is the final day to mail your 2000 federal tax returns under an extension granted after the Nisqually earthquake.
Post offices won’t be open late, so make sure you mail in time — the last pickup is 5 p.m. in most areas — for your envelope to be postmarked April 30.
Residents in Clallam, Jefferson and 18 other counties affected by the Feb. 28 earthquake got a two-week reprieve beyond the April 16 IRS deadline.
To take advantage of the extension, you must file your taxes the old-fashioned way — no electronic returns — and you must write in big, red letters “Washington State Earthquake” on the top of your return.
