MV Coho’s maintenance hiatus extended three days; car-passenger ferry to Victoria back Feb. 11

The MV Coho’s two-week break for maintenance has been extended.

Regular service between Port Angeles and Victoria will resume with the 8:20 a.m. sailing from Port Angeles on Friday, Feb. 11.

The original scheduled date for the car-passenger ferry to return to service was next Tuesday.

The extension is because of a delay in the completion of refurbishment work in the venerable vessel’s cafeteria, Black Ball Ferry Line announced Tuesday.

In addition to the customary annual maintenance belowdecks at a shipyard in Seattle, the 51-year-old Coho is getting new seating in the cafeteria this year.

Once the ferry’s sailings resume, the cafeteria, onboard duty-free and gift shops will offer a larger selection of products thanks to storage facility enhancements at the Port Angeles dock, a Black Ball Ferry Line spokesperson said.

While the Coho is in dry-dock, the passenger ferry Victoria Express has been operating weekends.

It will provide foot-passenger service to and from Victoria on Friday through Sunday, leaving Port Angeles at 8:30 a.m. and departing Victoria at 4 p.m.

Fares for the 55-minute crossing are $25 U.S. per person one way or $50 round trip.

Boarding in Port Angeles is from The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., just east of the Coho terminal.

The terminal used in Victoria by the Victoria Express is at 254 Belleville St., just west of the Black Ball terminal used by the Coho.

The only way to get cars and other motor vehicles to Vancouver Island during the Coho’s hiatus is by driving to Tsawwassen, British Columbia, south of Vancouver, and driving aboard a British Columbia ferry to Swartz Bay, about 15 miles north of Victoria.

Passports or other approved travel documents are always required for crossing the international border. Details are at www.victoriaexpress.com or www.cohoferry.com.

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
