Mystery Bay: Winds blow away small fuel spill

Strong winds dissipated a small fuel spill Tuesday on Mystery Bay before the cause could be investigated.

Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 (Chimacum) firefighters and paramedics were dispatched at 1:15 p.m. to Mystery Bay State Park north of Nordland to investigate the reported oil spill.

When they arrived, they found some oil — believed to be diesel fuel — washed up on the shore.

There was also a diesel odor present in the area, officials said.

But by the time a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flew over to investigate the spill, the oil sheen had dissipated, officials said.

The source of the spill was unable to be determined.
