About six U.S. and Canadian naval and Coast Guard ships will ply the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca this week as part of a planned drill to test the ability of both countries to communicate at sea.
Naval and Coast Guard helicopters and airplanes also will participate in the drill, which begins today and runs through Saturday, said Coast Guard Sector Seattle Lt. Collin Bronson.
Its purpose, he said, is so that “we know that everybody can talk to each other and we can carry out a plan.”
“We want to be able to move ships to various positions at various times, stay in formation, and launch and recover aircraft to each other’s ships.”
Bronson said no munitions will be used.
