TACOMA — Makah whaling is still on hold pending a federal judge ruling on whether to grant an injunction to stop a gray whale hunt.
U.S. District Court Judge Franklin D. Burgess heard arguments for animal rights groups and the Makah Wednesday in his Tacoma courtroom and said he plans to issue a written decision in a few days.
The motion for a preliminary injunction to halt whaling stems from a lawsuit filed in January that challenges an expanded gray whale hunt and questions a hunt’s compliance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
If the injunction is granted, it will extend a temporary restraining order enacted by Burgess earlier this month until the court can consider the merits of the case.
