PORT TOWNSEND — Fort Worden State Park officials are hoping one of the former military base’s oldest structures will reopen to the public by summer.
The medieval-looking Alexander’s Castle is undergoing extensive renovation in anticipation of allowing visitors to enjoy the unusual structure, park Manager Kate Burke said.
Before the February 2001 Nisqually earthquake weakened the masonry structure, it was rented out to visitors.
Now the 115-year-old building is in the middle of a major face lift.
The earthquake-damaged foundation was stabilized, Burke said.
Now workers are busy restoring the brickwork.
Inside, sheets of plywood cover gaping holes in the floor.
Last week, Alan Cole of Port Angeles-based Hoch Construction was strengthening the walls inside the building.
