New no-shooting zones proposed in Jefferson County

CHIMACUM — The Jefferson County No Shooting Area Review Committee has outlined two new no-shooting zones surrounding Chimacum, Irondale and Port Hadlock’s population centers, planning officials said Monday.

The new zones could see county commissioner approval by year’s end, following two public hearings that are yet to be scheduled.

During a briefing session Monday afternoon before the county commissioners and interim county Administrator Dennis Richards, county Assistant Planner Karen Barrows said the no-shooting area review committee met in July and September to draw boundaries for the newest no-shooting zones.

“They wanted it in place by duck season,” Barrows told the three county commissioners.

“It may not happen,” responded county Commissioner Phil Johnson, D-Port Townsend.

Duck hunting season begins Oct. 11. Commissioners said they want adequate time for public comments on the proposed zones before they are approved.

“I would certainly like to see it done before the holidays,” said Commissioner David Sullivan, D-Cape George.

The commissioners ask county Department of Community Development staff to redraw the map of the proposed zone to include school and park sites.
