Newcomers shine in Port Angeles City Council races

PORT ANGELES – Two new faces on the City Council seem assured, while a third is likely.

Tuesday’s ballot count showed that, in the Position 6 race for the Port Angeles City Council seat being vacated by Richard Headrick, Don Perry, owner of Port Angeles Heritage Tours, had a clear victory over Paul Sawyer, a retired timber industry employee.

Perry had 1,947 votes, or 62.79 percent, to 1,154 votes or 37.21 percent, for Sawyer.

In the Position 5 race, challenger Dan Di Guilio, former Clallam Transit System general manager, was heavily leading appointed incumbent Edna Petersen, owner of Necessities & Temptations gift shop.

Di Guilio had 1,835 votes, or 55.76 percent, to Petersen’s 1,456 votes, or 44.24 percent.

In the Position 7 race, challenger Cherie Kidd, owner of AAA Affordable Storage, was leading incumbent Grant Munro, a retired Rayonier executive.

Tuesday’s count showed Kidd with 1,711 votes, or 51.75 percent, to Munro’s 1,595 votes, or 48.25 percent.

Kidd was optimistic about her chances of victory, despite a lead that was slim compared to the other two races.

“I’m excited. The people of Port Angeles are speaking,” Kidd said.

“We’re going to have new leadership on the council.

“I’ve been putting my message out, and the people have been listening to me,” Kidd said.

“Now I’m going to listen to them.”

Munro was not ready to concede defeat.

“I’m behind by a few votes,” he said.

“It’s close. It’s a little early to know very much here, but it looks really close.”
