PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County commissioners plan to appoint a District Court judge for 13 days because of a state law.
Commissioners will consider on Dec. 31 appointing Mindy Walker, who won the general election and who will be sworn in to the position Dec. 31 — the day outgoing Judge Jill Landis retires — to serve from Jan. 1 through Jan. 13.
A special meeting originally set for last Friday — Dec. 21 — was canceled.
The action is in response to RCW 3.34.070, which says that a district judge’s term begins the second Monday in January, according to Julie Shannon, executive secretary for the county commissioners’ office.
