NEWS BRIEFS: Agreement reunion today in Olympia … and other items

OLYMPIA — Today, the Olympic Region office of the state Department of Natural Resources will coordinate a reunion of several original members of the Timber, Fish and Wildlife Policy group.

The group will meet from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at The Resort at Port Ludlow at One Heron Road. This is where many of the early negotiations in the historic agreement took place.

The gathering will commemorate the 30th year since the initiation of the state’s Timber, Fish and Wildlife Agreement, which is a cooperative process for relying on scientific research to develop, implement and review the state’s forest practices rules.

In 1987, several public agencies, environmental organizations, tribes and timber landowners forged the Timber, Fish and Wildlife Agreement as an alternative to confrontations between groups and potential lawsuits related to forestry issues.

The goal of the agreement is to protect such public resources as fresh water while maintaining a viable timber industry. Agencies and organizations participating in the agreement process have the opportunity to review and comment on applications for forest practices.

Timber, Fish and Wildlife meetings are organized by regional DNR offices on a regular basis across the state, providing stakeholders opportunities to address issues face to face.
