SEQUIM — During the Shipley Center’s recent St. Patrick’s Day luncheon, the center’s board president, Linda “BZ” Zabora, and board director, AnnaLee Smith, presented Executive Director Michael Smith with an award thanking him for his 10 years of dedicated service to the center and its members.
Zabora also recognized Smith’s vision for the future of the site.
“Michael has a dream that one day, the Shipley Center will have so much to offer our community, with a gymnasium, classrooms, inside walking track and so much more,” Zabora said.
The public can stop in between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays to take a tour and congratulate Smith on his years of service.
Nature slideshow
PORT TOWNSEND — Local nature photographers Beverly McNeil and Ed Robeau will present a slideshow, “Incredible Beauty of Costa Rica, Pura Vida (Pure Life),” at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The duo took a six-week adventure to explore nature trails in Costa Rica.
Their presentation includes some bird call recordings and a special feature on hummingbirds.
The suggested donation is $10 to benefit fellowship community projects.

Family Flicks set
SEQUIM — Weekend Family Flicks continue with a free screening of “Despicable Me 2” at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In 2014, “Despicable Me 2” (PG) was nominated for Academy Awards in the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories, and is a sequel to the 2010 animated hit “Despicable Me.”
“Charlie, The Lonesome Cougar” is the final film of this season’s Family Flicks and will be shown at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at the library.
Robert Beebe of Olympic Game Farm will share memories about the animal actors that were used during the film shoot and discuss the Sequim locations and local residents featured in the film.

Full moon gathering
SEQUIM — A free full moon and full lunar eclipse ceremony and celebration will be held at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The gathering begins with a polyphonic meditation using quartz crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, gongs, chimes, bells, yucca digeridoos and native flutes.
The celebration includes chanting, toning, drumming and dancing, followed by a potluck brunch.
Participants are invited to bring their own water and mats for floor meditation.

Easter breakfast
FORKS — Forks Emblem Club No. 488 and Concerned Citizens will host their annual Easter breakfast at the Forks Elks Lodge, 941 Merchant Road, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.
This event is open to the public and offers ham, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, scrambled eggs, pancakes, French toast, juice and coffee — all buffet style.
The cost is $7 for 12 and older, $5 for seniors and ages 5 to11, and free for 4 and younger.
All proceeds go toward new toys for children at Sunshine & Rainbows and Emblem Club scholarships for graduating seniors.
PAEF dinner slated
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Education Foundation (PAEF) will celebrate public education at its 24th annual fundraising dinner, to be held at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., on Friday, April 17.
A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., and dinner follows at 6:30 p.m.
Participants are invited to an evening with guest speaker Ron Jones as he presents “Celebrate Music in Our Schools.”
Jones, orchestra director at Port Angeles High School, will be joined by the school’s Chamber Orchestra.

PAEF members will sponsor a Pass the Hat event with a goal of raising funds to support school district music programs.

Student scholarship
The local chapter of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America is inviting applications for the Elena Buonpane Memorial Scholarship to assist students with an Italian heritage who are interested in Italian culture to further their education.
One local scholarship for $700 will be awarded for the academic school year of 2015-16 to be used at any college or technical school of the student’s choice.
Residents of Clallam and Jefferson counties in high school or college are eligible to apply.
The funds can be used for books or tuition and will be sent to the school of the student’s enrollment upon notification.
Applications are available at local high schools and Peninsula College counseling offices or by contacting Don Zanon at 360-452-8677.
The criteria for eligibility are:
■ Italian heritage.
■ Residency in Clallam or Jefferson County.
■ Evidence and name of college or technical school enrolled or applying to.
■ Written essay (200-500 words).

Soroptimist awards
PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist International of Port Angeles Jet-Set presented two $1,000 Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women.
Kristina Robinson is working toward a degree in communication. Laci Trussell is working on her degree in early childhood education. Both are enrolled at Peninsula College and will use their cash awards to complete or further their education.
Formerly called the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards, they help local women improve their economic situations.
The awards were given at a February Soroptimist breakfast.
The two award recipients will now advance to the Soroptimist Northwest region level, where they can receive up to an additional $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist $10,000 awards.
The Northwestern Region Conference will be held April 9-12 at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue.
The Live Your Dream Region Award Winner will be announced at the luncheon April 11.
The Northwestern Region consists of Washington, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Northern Idaho.

Tickets are $35 and must be purchased by Friday, April 10, to facilitate food ordering.

Scholarship auditions set next month
PORT ANGELES — Monday Musicale, an organization dedicated to raising funds for musical scholarships, invites high school senior music students intending to major or minor in music studies in college to audition.
The auditions, before three professional musicians, will be at First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., on Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m.
The first-place award of up to $3,000 honors the late Richard McCoy, an active participant in the organization over many years.
Three scholarship awards will be made: first, second and third places for a total of $6,000.
Music students should connect with the scholarship counselor at their high school to get forms.
Home-schooled students are encouraged to contact Dan Dutton, director of Northwinds Home School Band, or phone Jacqueline Chilcott at 360-683-7601 to obtain an application.
Forms should be returned to the Monday Musicale scholarship chair to the address shown on the forms by April 24.
Students will perform a classical piece of no more than 10 minutes before the judges.
Upon completion, each judge will offer a critique.
After all auditions, the judges will retire to make their decision that day.
Refreshments will be offered to those attending and waiting for award information.
’65 class reunion
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Roughriders Class of 1965 will celebrate its 50th class reunion Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19.
