NEWS BRIEFS: Fall programs set for QUUF … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has announced its fall 2018 Adult Learning Program schedule lineup.

Various free special events, courses and ongoing groups will be offered to the public from Monday through the first week of February 2019.

Offerings are designed to meet a variety of interests ranging from one-day workshops, lectures and field trips to weekly courses exploring personal belief systems, academic subjects, creativity, lifestyle challenges and choices, and physical activity, according to a news release.

Course brochures are available now at the Port Townsend Library, 1220 Lawrence St., the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave, Port Hadlock, the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St. or online at www.quuf.org.

Child care is available on request for programs during after-school hours.

Scholarships are available to help defray costs of books, materials and travel, event organizers said.

Demolition range on Bentinck Island set for use next week

ESQUIMALT, B.C. — The land-based demolition range at Bentinck Island will be in use Monday through Friday, Sept. 28, the Royal Canadian Navy announced.

The range will be in use from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily during that time.

Bentinck Island is located near Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and is used as a terrestrial demolition range by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Local residents will likely be unaware of the activities except on days when environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and wind direction affect how far the sound will travel.

Studies conducted on the potential environmental effects of Bentinck Island demolitions have found that blast noise in the marine environment during land-based demolitions is almost undetectable by acoustic equipment above that of other underwater background sounds such as waves and marine life, the Royal Canadian Navy said in a news release.

Unity speaker slated for PA church

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Bill Evans will speak on “Who knows What?” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle Ave.

Evans currently serves as president of Oakbridge University.

He lives in Port Angeles with his wife, Kathy, and son, Josh.

Sunday’s service begins at 10 a.m. Child care is available.

Taize service

PORT ANGELES — St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth St. will host an ecumenical Taize service at 7 p.m. Monday.

In a meditative candlelit atmosphere which includes singing simple repetitive songs one may simply sit peacefully during the hour-long service or join the chorus while experiencing the calming effect of being in God’s presence.

Interfaith meeting

PORT ANGELES — The Interfaith Community of Clallam County will hold an introductory meeting from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Fellowship Hall, 301 E. Lopez Ave.

This organization is planning to develop a stronger interfaith community using the International Charter for Compassion framework.

The meeting is to find leaders to support that goal.

Catholicism class

SEQUIM — St. Joseph’s Catholic Church will be presenting a program of classes on Catholicism starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The free classes will be held weekly though Easter at St. Joseph’s parish hall, 121 E. Maple St.

This program is oriented toward people interested in becoming Catholic or exploring what the Catholic church teaches.
