COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at NAS Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville today (Sunday) through Saturday.
On Tuesday and Thursday, training is scheduled at Coupeville in the early evening.
Training is also scheduled early in the afternoon Friday.

E-book information
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., is offering two opportunities this month to learn how to download library e-books.
An evening session will be held Monday at 6:30 p.m.
A morning session will be offered Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Library staff will demonstrate how to use the North Olympic Library System website to find e-books to check out and how to download e-books to an e-reader, tablet or smartphone.
It is not necessary to have a device to attend.
Each program will allow time for questions and hands-on explanations.
These programs are free and open to the public.

Work party slated
QUILCENE — Jefferson Land Trust staff and volunteers invite the community to explore local conservation lands and the variety of stewardship activities that go into protecting these habitats.
A work party is scheduled for Monday at the Lower Donovan Creek Preserve from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Trust staff will provide gloves and tools.
The work party is open to those of all abilities and includes a protected-property tour.

Mulching lecture
PORT TOWNSEND — The WSU Master Gardeners will present “Using Mulch and Water Effectively in the Garden” at this month’s educational lecture series from noon to 1 p.m. Monday.
This free brown-bag garden lecture takes place at the WSU Extension office in Point Hudson, 380 Jefferson St.
The lecture will be presented by Jefferson County Master Gardener Sarah Fairbank.
Questions and sharing personal mulching and watering techniques are encouraged throughout the lecture.

Senior site meals slated this week
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.
A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.
People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

‘EcoVillage’ talk
PORT ANGELES — A meeting that will focus on creating an “EcoVillage” in the Dungeness Valley will be held at the Natural Healing Clinic, 162 S. Barr Road, at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
EcoVillages are urban or rural communities of people who strive to integrate a supportive social environment with a low-impact, sustainable way of life.
To achieve this, they integrate various aspects of ecological design, permaculture, ecological building, green production, alternative energy and more.

PC welding class
PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College’s Community Education Division will offer a seven-week, noncredit evening beginning-advanced welding lab from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday and Tuesday starting June 30.
The program runs through Aug. 12.
The class is designed for all levels of welding experience, from beginning to advanced.
The first class session will include a safety orientation, and students will work with the instructor to determine what process of welding they would like to focus on.
Tuition for the course, which includes the cost of all materials, is $606.
Financial aid may be available for individual students who qualify.

LEXINGTON, Va. — Meredith Nicole Roberts of Sequim recently received a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Washington and Lee University.

Elks honor sophomores at dinner
SEQUIM — Two Sequim High School sophomores were honored by the Sequim Elks Lodge at their May Social Night Dinner.
Audrey Shingleton was honored for the month of April and Sahara Stanton for the month of May.
Both were selected for their high academic achievements as well as involvement in school activities.
Audrey holds a 4.0 grade-point average and is class treasurer and part of the Honors Society and Future Business Leaders of America.
Her interests are business, writing and urban design. She is active in track, soccer and cross-country running.
She plans to attend California Polytechnic State University and then work for an athletic company.
She is the daughter of Bridget and James Shingleton of Sequim.
Sahara holds a 3.983 GPA and is involved in the Honor Societys and American Sign Language Honor Society Leadership.
Her interests are music, shopping, American Sign Language, musicals and dancing. Her hobbies are art, singing and tennis, and she is a member of the tennis team.
She plans to attend college and become either a lawyer or an ASL teacher at a deaf school.
She is the daughter of Shawn and Rebecca Stanton of Sequim.
Philosophy doctorate
PORT ANGELES — Paul Hendrickson, son of Dan and Judy Hendrickson of Port Angeles, has received a doctorate in philosophy in systems engineering from George Washington University.
The degree conferment was recognized with a formal doctoral hooding ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Hendrickson, a major in the Air Force, also holds a master’s degree from the university and a bachelor’s from Tulane University.
He and his wife, Tessa, and daughter, Noelle, live in Dayton, Ohio, where he is stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
Club scholarships
PORT TOWNSEND — Shawn Huston, Joshua King, Juhi LaFuente, Lucas Murphy and Serena Vilage have been awarded maritime educational scholarships by the Port Townsend Yacht Club.
Huston is a sophomore at Skagit Valley College’s Marine Maintenance Technology Program. He is receiving a $200 scholarship. He plans to graduate with an associates degree in technical arts.
King is a senior at Quilcene High School. He is receiving a $700 scholarship. He has been accepted at the Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle and plans to become a commercial diver and work as an underwater welder.
LaFuente is in her second year at Western Washington University and is pursuing a degree in marine ecology through WWU’s Huxley College of the Environment. She has been awarded a $200 scholarship.
Murphy graduated from Quilcene High School in 2013. He has been awarded a scholarship of $700. He will attend the Seattle Maritime Academy, which is a branch of the Seattle Central Community College, in Ballard and plans to work as a merchant marine in engineering.
Vilage is a 2013 graduate of Port Townsend High School. She has been awarded a $400 scholarship. She will attend Skagit Valley Community College’s Marine Maintenance Technology Program.
Gonzaga honors
SPOKANE — Several students from the Olympic Peninsula have received honors at Gonzaga University.
Students who have earned placement on the 2014 spring semester dean’s list are Abigail Berry of Sequim, Lacey Konopaski of Port Angeles and Michael Konopaski of Port Angeles.
Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.69 grade-point average to be listed.
Students who have earned placement on the president’s list for the 2014 spring semester are Caitlin Pallai of Sequim, Elise Reid of Port Angeles and Brian Santman of Beaver.
Students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 GPA to be listed.
Skylar Michelle Jones, daughter of Sherri Dobbins Jones of Port Angeles, graduated cum laude from Gonzaga University with a degree in special education and elementary education.
Ensign graduates
BREMERTON — Navy Ensign Lorna L. Kimple, daughter of Chester B. Kimple of Clallam Bay and Karen M. Kimple of Bremerton, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned to her current rank.
Graduation and commissioning is the culmination of a rigorous four-year program of academic, military and physical training designed to produce combat leaders of character for the Navy and Marine Corps.
In the Naval Academy’s Class of 2014, 1,068 midshipmen graduated, of which 784 sailors were commissioned as Navy ensigns and 265 Marines were commissioned as Marine Corps second lieutenants.
Soroptimists award $2,000 scholarships
SEQUIM — Soroptimist International of Sequim has given awards to Sequim High School seniors Ciara Westhoven and Hayley Marie Robinson.
Westhoven has won the Marcia Beggs Memorial Scholarship of $2,000.
Westhoven performs with the Select Choir, Operetta Club and Talent Show, and has won regional and state honors.
She has also given her energies to the Middle School Leaders Retreat and Link Crew, and has managed the swim team.
Westhoven will attend Corban University in Salem, Ore., and work toward a degree in music education.
Robinson has won the Ruth Mogan Memorial Scholarship of $2,000.
Robinson has been in the Sequim High School Talent Show every year and has been in school choir throughout elementary and middle schools, plus two years in high school.
She has been in charge of the youth music programs at her church since seventh grade and has participated in its youth group Mexico mission trip.
Robinson will attend Shoreline Community College and work toward a degree in audio engineering.
St. Olaf dean’s list
NORTHFIELD — Several St. Olaf College students from the Olympic Peninsula have been named to the school’s dean’s list:
■ Rinnah Becker of Port Townsend is a music major. She is a graduate of Port Townsend High School and the daughter of Paul Becker and Lisa Crosby.
■ John Erich Christian of Port Angeles is a physics major. He is a graduate of Port Angeles High and the son of David Christian and Elizabeth Christian.
■ Karl Schick of Port Angeles is a biology major. He is a graduate of Kodiak High School and the son of Randall Schick and Solveig Christenson.
The dean’s list recognizes students with a semester grade-point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
