FORKS — A portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail and two Forest Service roads will be subject to temporary closures beginning as early as Thursday.
Forest Service Road 2929-070, which is about 32 miles northeast of Forks and is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail, will be closed from milepost 0 to milepost 2.9.
Since the road is part of the trail, the closure is coordinated with Clallam County.
Forest Service Road 2929 from milepost 9.7 to milepost 11.1 will also be affected by hauling activity during the duration of a timber sale.
The closure is expected to last until about Sept. 1.
The road will be closed to public vehicle access at all times while the trail will be closed to all access at specific times to ensure public safety when timber falling operations for the Rail 2 Timber Sale are underway, the National Forest Service said.
The trail will be open on weekends from 4:30 p.m. Fridays through 6 a.m. Mondays and on federal holidays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
During periods of trail closure, users will be rerouted along U.S. Highway 101 between mileposts 212.0 and 216.4, or Forest Service Road 2918 and Cooper Ranch Road.
Signs will be posted on the trail.
The area is being thinned for habitat restoration; a combination of Douglas fir, hemlock and some hardwoods will be harvested.

QUILCENE — The Quilcene School board will hold a special meeting today at 5 p.m. in the boardroom (room 9) at the school, 294715 U.S. Highway 101.

Sister City program
SEQUIM — Current eighth-grade students are being sought to apply for an exchange program with Sister City Shiso, Japan.
Interested students and at least one parent or guardian are invited to a meeting in the Sequim Middle School library, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, this Thursday at 7 p.m.
The first planning meeting was Tuesday.
The 10-day trip will host 10 students, trip coordinator and chaperones.
The education and cultural exchange program is coordinated by the Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association, a committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

Orchestra performs
The Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra — featuring cellist Traci Winters — will perform at two concerts this weekend.
The first will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.
The second will be at the same time Saturday at the Sequim Worship Center, 640 N. Sequim Ave.
Admission to either event is $12 for those 17 and older and free for those 16 and younger accompanied by an adult.

Parkinson’s forum
SEQUIM — Marsha E. Melnick of the Sequim Physical Therapy Center will present a “WOW! Working on Wellness Forum” titled “Healthy Living with Parkinson’s: Tips for the Entire Family” at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., at 2:30 p.m. today.
The forum will cover the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s and discuss how the patient and caregiver or spouse can handle them so both stay healthy through exercise, social outings and pursuing separate activities some of the time, according to a news release.
Melnick is professor emerita and clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and San Francisco State graduate program in physical therapy. She specializes in the treatment of neuromuscular dysfunction and Parkinson’s disease.
The forum is free and open to the public.
Flight operations
COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field today.
Operations are scheduled from mid- to late afternoon.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Reading Series will feature two writers Thursday, May 12, starting at 7 p.m. at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.
Jenifer Browne Lawrence is the author of Grayling and One Hundred Steps from Shore.
Her awards include the Perugia Press Prize, the Orlando Poetry Prize, the James Hearst Poetry Prize, the Potomac Review poetry award and a Washington State Artist Trust GAP grant.
Her recent work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review, Narrative, North American Review, Rattle and elsewhere.
She lives on the Kitsap Peninsula and edits Crab Creek Review.
Stan Sanvel Rubin’s fourth poetry collection, There. Here, was published in 2013 by Lost Horse Press.
His third, Hidden Sequel (2006), won the Barrow Street Book Prize.
His poems have appeared in national magazines and are forthcoming in The National Poetry Review, Red Savina Review, Kentucky Review and Poetry Northwest.
He and his wife, the late Judith Kitchen, retired as founding directors of the Rainier Writing Workshop low-residency MFA program at Pacific Lutheran University in 2014.
Northwind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that sponsors visual, musical and literary art events and education on the Olympic Peninsula.

PA boating safety class set Saturday
PORT ANGELES — The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will host a basic boating safety class from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.
After completing the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion, which is needed to receive a Washington state boating card.
