SHINE — The Hood Canal Bridge will close twice today for construction.
The bridge will be closed between 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. today and then it will be intermittently closed between 11 p.m. today to 4 a.m. Friday.
During the latter, five-hour time frame, crews working for the state Department of Transportation will open the bridge to traffic several times to ease congestion. The traffic openings will be unscheduled and performed as workloads allow.
The unusual 60-minute daytime closure scheduled from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. is needed because critical measurements must be taken on the bridge and unfavorable tides prevent the work from being done during night hours, Transportation said in a press rleease.
The closure could mean that delivery of the Peninsula Daily News will be delayed. The newspaper is printed in Everett and brought back over the bridge in the early morning hours.
Contractor crews are replacing the Hood Canal Bridge’s gear boxes and hydraulic hoses, and adjusting and aligning the guide rollers that are responsible for operating the drawspan for marine traffic.
Transportation awarded the $5.2 million project to Northbank Civil and Marine Inc. in October. Work is expected to be completed this fall.
