NEWS BRIEFS: Leak closes Clallam Bay School early for holidays … and other items

CLALLAM BAY — Clallam Bay School students got an early break for Thanksgiving after a water leak canceled school Tuesday.

The main waterline going into the school has a leak, said Principal Kris Hanson. He anticipates school also will be canceled today while the leak is repaired.

He said the ground was noticeably saturated near the leak but that there was no damage to any property or buildings.

He said maintenance crews and plumbers needed time to find hard-to-locate materials to repair the pipe and that he expects repairs will actually happen today.

Clallam 4-H members earn awards

PORT ANGELES — In November, Clallam County 4-H members and their families and friends came together to celebrate the annual Achievement Afternoon, held at the Home Arts Building at the Clallam County Fairgrounds.

During the celebration, 4-H Clubs shared videos of their past year, youth members earned their year pins, many awards were given to exceptional 4-H’ers and 4-H adult volunteer leaders were recognized for their years of service.

The coronation of the 2016 Clallam County Fair Junior Royalty court — Kara Meyer, Gabe O’Connor, Norah Schmidt and Laurel Williams — also was held.

A highlight of the afternoon was the 4-H Council scholarship fundraiser drawing. This year, a drawing was held for a whole pork raised by Clallam County 4-H member Austin Wagner, with an additional prize of a cord of wood.

Funds raised from the drawing supported scholarships for graduating 4-H members. The 2016 scholarship recipients were David Bennett (Forks), Ciara Gentry (Port Angeles), Cassidy Hodgin (Port Angeles), Natalie Napiontek (Port Angeles), Austin Wagner (Sequim) and Kelly Anders (Sequim).
