NEWS BRIEFS: MV Coho ferry resumes sailings today . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — The MV Coho ferry will be back in business today.

Black Ball Ferry Line’s Coho ferry will return from its annual maintenance break with an 8:20 a.m. sailing from Port Angeles to Victoria, returning at 4 p.m.

It will continue offering one round trip per day through Feb. 12. It will offer two trips daily during the Presidents Day holiday weekend.

The ferry has been out of service since Jan. 19 to complete regular refurbishments and maintenance.

Oil spill readiness

PORT ANGELES — A free community workshop on oil spill response and readiness is set from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

The workshop will be in City Council chambers, 321 E. Fifth St.

The workshop, which is sponsored by the Clallam County Marine Resources Committee and the Northwest Straits Commission and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, anticipates an addition of oil pipelines and terminals in the region that could mean more oil tanker and cargo ship traffic in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The workshop will address the possibilities of a major oil spill, resources for dealing with spills and how volunteers can be involved.

Chad Bowechop of the Makah tribe will present the findings of a recently completed Makah Tribe Vessel Traffic Risk Assessment.

Opportunities will be presented for volunteer training.
