NEWS BRIEFS: Operation Christmas Child accepting donations … and other items

Operation Christmas Child will accept donations beginning Monday in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Donations such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items and letters of encouragement packaged in a shoebox will be accepted at locations in Forks, Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend until Monday, Nov. 20.

The drop-off locations and hours are:

Forks: The Caring Place, 481 W. E St.; 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Nov. 17, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18-19 and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 20.

Sequim: Eastern Hills Community Church, 91 Savannah Lane; 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Nov. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 19 and 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 20.

Port Angeles: Bethany Pentecostal Church, 506 S. Francis St.; 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday-Nov. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 19 and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 20.

For those who prefer online shopping, virtual shoeboxes can be created by visiting samaritanpurse.org/occ.

The shoebox gifts are delivered to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine.

The children who receive these boxes are selected by local volunteers from various evangelical denominations in partnership with a National Leadership Team from Samaritan’s Purse.

This year’s goal is to contribute more than 12,000 shoebox gifts toward the 2017 global goal of reaching 12 million children.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham.

Since 1993, the operation has collected and delivered more than 146 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

Musician visits

Singer-songwriter Nancy Stewart will perform at various North Olympic Library System branches in the upcoming weeks.

The public is invited to her free performances at the branches in Sequim, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16; Port Angeles, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17; and Forks, 171 S. Forks Ave., at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15.

In addition to the concerts, Stewart will offer a workshop for early childhood educators and music professionals Nov. 16 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library.

During the workshop, she will offer tips on how to share music with young children.

The workshop is free, and preregistration is not required.

Stewart is a national award-winning musician who has been writing and performing for young children and their families for 20 years, according to a news release.

Child screenings

PORT ANGELES —The Port Angeles School District will hold a Childfind Developmental Screening on Thursday for preschool-aged students.

Screenings for 3- to 5-year-olds are by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call special education coordinator Leslie Mraz at 360-565-3728

The purpose of the screening is to identify any developmental delays that can potentially affect a child’s educational performance, according to a news release.

Dream award applications

PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist International of Port Angeles’ Noon and Jet Set have set Wednesday as the deadline for its Live Your Dream Award.

An application form is available to download at www.pencol.edu. Forms are to be postmarked to Sally Pearson, 352 Schoolhouse Point Lane, Sequim, WA 98382, or emailed to sallypearson61@gmail.com.

The award, formerly titled the Women’s Opportunity Award, will be given in the amount of $500 to $1,000.

Eligible candidates must live in the Port Angeles area, have financial need, be a female head of household and have financial responsibility for a dependent.

Applicants must also have a 2.5 grade-point average or better, be enrolled in continuing education for the 2017-18 academic year and attend an undergraduate degree program or a vocational skills training program.

The scholarship can be used to offset costs associated with efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books and fees.

Recipients of the award may also be eligible to receive region-level awards that are granted through Soroptimist’s 28 geographic regions, according to a news release.
