NEWS BRIEFS: PEO to hold annual bazaar this Saturday … and other items

SEQUIM — The Philanthropic Education Organization’s JC chapter will hold its 10th annual Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The bazaar will be held at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave.

Some items available at the bazaar include hand-made crafts, Christmas decorations, baked goods, hand-made cards, books, puzzles and plants.

The bazaar will feature a raffle for a twin-sized quilt made by Esther Alward, a quilted table runner with matching place mats and ceramic cookie jar full of treats. Tickets are $1 each and the winner does not need to be present at the 1 p.m. drawing.

This year the bazaar also will add a silent auction for a hand-made cross-stitched double bed quilt made in the 1960s.

The bazaar raises funds for international scholarships, grants, awards and loans to help women enhance their lives through learning.

Schools recognized

BELLEVUE — Neah Bay High School and Roosevelt Elementary School were named Schools of Distinction by the Center for Educational Effectiveness in an Oct. 9 press release.

The award is based on sustained improvement in graduation rates for high schools and on sustained improvement in English language arts and math achievement.

Only 91 schools across the state received the award.

Tourism grants available

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau (OPVB) is seeking applications for qualified tourism project grants.

The deadline for applications is Monday.

They will be considered by the OPVB Board on Nov. 19.

The board is interested in funding projects primarily targeted to off-peak season activities within Clallam County.

“Our goal is to help develop a more year-round tourism base, to better contribute to a healthy local economy, supporting local spending, tax generation and local jobs,” Marsha Massey, OPVB executive director, said in a news release.

Funds for these grants are derived from lodging tax revenues.
