NEWS BRIEFS: Republican Women set to meet in Port Townsend … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — The Republican Women of Jefferson County plan to meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Reservations are required for the gathering at the Highway 20 Roadhouse, 2152 W. Sims Way.

Park & Rec board

SEQUIM — Clallam County Park & Recreation District No. 1 Board of Commissioners will discuss a potential energy savings project in cooperation with the YMCA when it meets Wednesday.

Commissioners will meet at 5 p.m. at the Sequim YMCA, 610 N. Sequim Ave.

Also on the agenda is a financial report and a YMCA quarterly update.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District Board of Directors is expected to approve a resolution for a Haller Foundation grant when it meets Thursday.

The board will meet at the district’s Central Service Building, 216 E. Fourth St., at 7 p.m.

The regular meeting will be preceded by a board work session at 5:30 p.m.

Also on the regular meeting agenda is a June financial report, as well as approval of second readings of instructional materials.

New closing hour for PT city service

PORT TOWNSEND — The city Development Service Department has announced that it will change its operating hours effective Monday, July 16.

The department at 250 Madison St., Suite 3, will then close daily at 4 p.m. on and after Monday.

The deadline for submitting applications at the front counter will be 3:30 p.m.

Closing at 4 p.m. will allow department staff an hour to process applications and return phone calls at the end of each business day, with the goal of providing a quicker and more efficient turnaround for permit review and issuance, according to a news release.

Call for vendors

SEQUIM — The city and the city Arts Advisory Commission are currently accepting proposals from qualified organizations to provide food and nonalcoholic beverage sales for two community events.

Vendors are sought for 2018 Music in the Park concert series at the James Center for the Performing Arts in Carrie Blake Park, which are held Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Additionally, the city seeks vendors for the Aug. 3 Block Party at Civic Center Plaza from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Chain gang busy

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Chain Gang removed weeds and brush from Mt. Pleasant Rain Garden and disposed of debris during the week of June 25-28.

Notable items found along roadways were one camp trailer frame with wood bed, a metal frame to a mattress, pieces of metal, plywood, motorhome or van carpet, a starter, burned recliner, cooler, shoes and a screwdriver.

Crew members found illegal dumpsites on Forest Roads No. 2918 and 2902 totaling 1,320 pounds of garbage from the dumpsites.

Crew members also trimmed 5,840 feet of guardrail on Lower Elwha, Crown Z Water Park and Camp Hayden roads.

Crew members also sprayed or pulled approximately 1,200 Scotch broom plants on Mary Clark Road.

Crew members also brushed and chipped a total of 2.5 miles of county-right-of-way on Black Diamond, East Bluff and Camp Hayden roads.

From July 2 to 6, the CCSO Chain Gang drove Chain Gang No. 4 “Big Green” through the Forks Fourth of July parade.

The chain gang has so far this year cleaned 64.25 miles of roadway, picked up 45,780 pounds of dumpsite litter, picked up 3,990 pounds of roadside litter, recycled 272 pounds of aluminum, removed or sprayed 22,835 Scotch broom plants, trimmed 15,309 feet of guardrail and brushed 8.75 miles of county rights of way.

For the forest service, the chain gang has so far this year cleaned two miles of forest roads or trails; removed 12,610 pounds of dumpsite litter; and removed 15 hazard trees.

Law enforcement given awards for their service

SEQUIM — During its annual awards dinner, the International Footprint Association Chapter 74 recognized 12 Officers of the Year from public safety agencies within Clallam County.

Law enforcement officers and firefighters were nominated and joined by their host agencies’ superiors and recognized at the awards ceremony at Sequim Elks.

The awardees are Rick Crabb, PenCom communication officer; Brian Knutson Clallam County Sheriff’s Office detective; Kindryn Leiter, Sequim Police Department officer; Luke Brown, Port Angeles Police Department officer; Ricardo Gonzales, Elwha Klallam Police Department officer; and Coty A. Hayes, federal Boarder Patrol agent.

Also, Eric Ellefson, State Patrol trooper; Michael Adamich, Port Angeles Fire Department captain; Ian Brueckner, Clallam County Fire District No. 2 firefighter-paramedic; Chantal Hughes, Clallam Bay Corrections Center officer; Carolyn Flint, Clallam County Fire District No. 4 emergency medical technician; and Anaka Hughes, Clallam County Fire District No. 3 emergency medical technician.
