NEWS BRIEFS: Septics class set Oct. 19 … and other items

SEQUIM — Registration is open now for Clallam County Environmental Health’s free informational septic system class from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.

The class will be at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

Septic 101 is an introductory class designed for homeowners who want to learn more about their septic systems.

The course describes different types of septic systems, general system care and maintenance, and do’s and don’ts for a healthy system.

Preregistration is required and is available online through www.clallam.net/septic or by calling 360-417-2258.

CERT Training

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office will begin to offer an eight-week Community Emergency Response Training program Thursday.

Registration is required for the course. To register, contact Jayme Wisecup at 360-417-2525 or jwisecup@co.clallam.wa.us.

The first seven installments will occur at the Port Angeles Fire Department, 102 E. Fifth St., until Nov. 17.

Following the holidays, the final course will resume Nov. 30 in the Emergency Operations Center Training Room [Room 70] at the Clallam County Courthouse, 233 E. Fourth St.

All courses will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency CERT curriculum will teach citizens how to safely approach emergency and disaster scenarios.

Curriculum will include providing basic medical assistance, extinguishing small fires, as well as conducting search and rescue missions.

Completing this program will allow graduates to participate in supplemental trainings and non-emergency projects around the community, according to a news release.

PA tourism summit set Oct. 26-27

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission’s 2017 Tourism Summit will be held Oct. 26-27.

Registration is required for this event and can be completed online by visiting www.chambersignups.com. Vendors can also register on the website.

The summit, themed “Raising the Tide — A Culture of Collaboration,” will be held at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and ending at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 27.

Workshops, panels and hands-on networking will be available.

An evening reception Oct. 26 titled “Celebrating Our Shared Ocean,” sponsored by the Olympic National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and Black Ball Ferry Line, will be held, as well as a “Lunch & Learn” event Oct. 27, led by the Olympic Culinary Group.

A 65-foot-long historic tug rests in the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina’s 300-ton marine lift as workers use pressure washers to blast years of barnacles and other marine life off the hull. The tug was built for the U.S. Army at Peterson SB in Tacoma in 1944. Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
