NEWS BRIEFS — ‘Stream’ art on display at Peninsula College through May 15 . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — A solo exhibition by Oregon artist Robert Tomlinson is now in Peninsula College’s PUB Gallery of Art, located on the main campus in Port Angeles, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The 16 pieces are all part of his most recent mixed media work, which he commenced in 2013.

Known as the “Stream” series, the works are all done in oil stick, pastel, chalk, pencil and acrylic on paper.

The exhibit runs through Thursday, May 15. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

On May 15, Tomlinson will present an artist’s lecture as part of the college’s Studium Generale program, which will begin at 12:35 p.m. in the college’s Little Theater on the Port Angeles campus.

His presentation will be followed immediately by a reception in the adjacent PUB Gallery of Art.

Tomlinson’s Studium presentation is titled “An Exploration of Language and the Visual Arts and the Collaborative Process.”

He will talk about how and where he became interested in poetry and then, later, the visual arts as well as about the nature of collaboration and the trials and tribulations that come from working with others.

He will also discuss new work that is included in his exhibition in the PUB Gallery of Art and what led up to it as well as sharing some images of new works in progress.

Navy bus strikes vehicle in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — A woman’s green Subaru was struck from behind by a U.S. Navy bus while she drove downtown over the weekend, sending her to the hospital with minor injuries.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue received notice of the accident at 3:39 p.m. Sunday and arrived at the intersection of Water and Tyler streets.

Both vehicles were travelling eastbound according to a news release.

Information on the model of the Subaru, its driver’s identity and the extent of her injuries was not immediately available Monday, though her injuries were described as not life-threatening.

The driver of the van, Timothy Rote, 74, of Bainbridge Island was uninjured and cited for following too close, according to Port Townsend Police.

Benefit raises $20,000 for women’s foundation

PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Community Foundation Fund for Women and Girls honored its top donors with a five-year “birthday party” recently at Chevy Chase Inn.

The evening raised nearly $20,000 for the fund.

Carol McGough, a founding “mother” of the foundation and early supporter of the fund, spoke about the ways in which her mother encouraged her to believe she could accomplish anything if she put her mind to it.

Lela Hilton of the Clemente Course and Susan Whitmire from Kitsap Bank spoke about the success of a new course they developed with Dove House Advocacy Services: an introductory course in the humanities combined with information about personal financial management for women coming out of domestic abuse situations.

Steering committee member Anne Burns revealed the results of conversations held in Port Townsend, Port Hadlock and Quilcene between Fund for Women and Girls Steering Committee members and local women and girls about areas of greatest needs.

The areas identified during those conversations and the votes of women were totaled, and “Education and Training” was selected as the 2014 grant focus.

Requests for proposals for the Fund for Women and Girls’ 2014 grant will be available at the JCCF website in July, and the $5,000 grant will be awarded in the fall.

For more information about the fund, phone Carla Caldwell at 360-3853797 or visit www.jccfgives.org.
