NEWS BRIEFS: Today’s Port Angeles ethics board meeting switched to Thursday . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — A city board of ethics meeting scheduled for today has been moved to Thursday.

The public meeting will be at 2 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St., according to a news release.

The meeting is focused on an ethics complaint filed by the anti-fluoridation group Our Water, Our Choice! against Deputy Mayor Cherie Kidd following a contentious Feb. 2 City Council meeting that she chaired.

Promotions given

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict will hold a ceremony Friday to promote Deputy Ed Anderson and Detective Shaun Minks to the position of patrol sergeant.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Emergency Operations Center, 223 E. Fourth St.

Anderson has served as the acting sergeant in the West End of Clallam County since November 2015, according to a news release.

He started as a patrol deputy June 27, 2004, with the sheriff’s office and has lived and worked in the West End as the resident Clallam Bay/Sekiu deputy since that time.

Anderson previously worked as a deputy for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and police officer for the city of Vader.

He is a hostage negotiator and forensic child interviewer. Anderson will continue serving the citizens of the West End as a patrol sergeant.

Minks was hired as a patrol deputy July 18, 2007, and was transferred to be a detective Nov. 1, 2015.

Minks is a Port Angeles High School graduate who enlisted in the Army after graduation and served tours in Iraq and Kosovo.

He is a field training officer, member of the tactical tracking team, a firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, and a Simunition and use of force simulator operator/instructor.

Dental care issues talk set for PT

PORT TOWNSEND — A presentation with Sea Mar Community Health Centers and the Washington Dental Service Foundation will take place at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Presenters will include Jefferson County Public Health Community Health Director Dunia Faulx, Sea Mar Dental Director Dr. Alex Narvaez and Washington Dental Service Foundation President Dr. Tom Locke.

The presentation will focus on access to preventive care (both medical and dental), access to mental health and substance abuse care, immunizations and healthy living.

PT Family Orchestra concert set

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Family Orchestra will hold a performance at the Seaport Landing Retirement Home, 1201 Hancock St., at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Classical music will be played that includes Bach, Mozart, Smetana, Bartok, Handel, Joplin, Holst and some contemporary pieces.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed.

PoetrySLAM

PORT ANGELES — The 2016 Clallam County PoetrySLAM competition will take place at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Participants need to be in the sixth grade and create and read an original piece of poetry or published poem.

Elimination rounds will be held in local classrooms. The final round will take place at the library.

Prizes include a Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet and gift certificates to local bookstores.

The event is free and open to the public.

Reading series

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Arts Center will host authors Linda Bierds and Holly Hughes at the center, 701 Water St., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The reading will include the award-winning authors’ works, including poetry and prose.

There is a $3 to $5 suggested donation. All proceeds go to the Northwind nonprofit, which funds visual, musical and literary art events and education on the Olympic Peninsula.
