PORT ANGELES — Two people suffered minor injuries when they fell out of a raft on the Elwha River and swam to safety just downstream from the U.S. Highway 101 bridge last week, an Olympic National Park official said.
The injured people, who were not identified, declined medical transport after the incident Monday afternoon, park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Munger responded to the scene, Deputy Bill Cortani said.
Clallam County Fire District No. 2 was called at 3:15 p.m. to provide stand-by on the Elwha River bridge, district Chief Sam Phillips said.
“We did have a couple rangers who responded,” Maynes said.
Phillips and Maynes had no further details about the incident, which occurred outside the park boundaries about a quarter-mile north of the bridge.
PA bus driver to retire
PORT ANGELES — Sheri McLane, a Port Angeles native, is retiring after more than 30 years as a school bus driver.
She will be honored from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pupil Transportation Center, 627 Monroe Road, during the center’s end-of-the-year barbecue.
Those who know McLane are invited to attend.
McLane started her career in Forks before coming to the Port Angeles School District.
She has driven special-needs students to school for the majority of her years as a school bus driver.
Charges pending
PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Townsend man has been arrested for investigation of one count of malicious mischief and three counts of unlawful imprisonment, all domestic violence-related, after rendering a woman’s car undriveable early Tuesday morning.
Cory Tyler Blake, 27, remained in the Jefferson County jail Tuesday with no bail set after his arrest.
He allegedly ripped a spark plug wire from the car of woman he shared a home with and slashed one of the car’s tires, said Officer Patrick Fudally, Port Townsend police spokesman.
Police gave the following account:
Officers were called to a home at the 4300 block of Haines Street at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday to the report of a man and woman screaming in the street.
Fudally and Officer Luke Bogues arrived to find a 26-year-old woman sitting in a car in the dark with her two children, ages 3 and 10.
The woman, who was not identified, told police she had been arguing with Blake.
He disconnected the spark plug and slashed the tire during the argument, according to the woman, and also reportedly removed the battery cable from a second car he and the woman used.
Officers reconnected the battery wire on the second car, allowing the woman to take her two children and leave the home.
Parkinson’s dance
PORT ANGELES — A dance class — with live music by pianist Linda Dowdell — for people with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions will be open at the Sons of Norway Hall, 131 W. Fifth St., this Friday.
The class will go from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., with admission a suggested $10 donation, while patients’ spouses and caregivers are invited to come free.
This class is for anyone who would enjoy 90 minutes of great music, interesting moves and positive people, noted coordinator Darlene Jones.
“Accommodations are made for folks with walkers or those who need to remain seated,” she added.
The instructors now include Kayla Oakes of Port Angeles, who has recently completed Dance with Parkinson’s training.

PT marine center plans training today (Wednesday)
PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is offering a series of training opportunities for both new and returning volunteers, beginning with a general volunteer overview at the Natural History Exhibit at Fort Worden beach from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.
Additional sessions will be held Tuesday to learn about the Marine Exhibit and the Foss Discovery Lab; on Wednesday, June 18, to explore the Natural History Exhibit and wrap up the sessions; and Thursday, June 19, with a workshop on climate change interpretation.
All sessions are from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“We welcome anyone with an interest in marine life and helping to improve the health of the Salish Sea to attend,” said Amy Johnson, volunteer coordinator for the center.
“No experience is necessary, and people are not required to attend all sessions. It’s free to participate, but reservations are requested.”

Co-ed roller derby
SEQUIM — Port Scandalous Roller Derby’s co-ed team will play against Kitsap County’s Skate Club at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., on Saturday.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Yacht Club will hold a swap meet and indoor yard sale at 1305 Marine Drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The eighth annual Outdoor Marine Swap Meet and Indoor Yard Sale is an opportunity to find or sell marine-related equipment or purchase some household items offered by the Yacht Club Ladies.
Seller spaces for the swap meet are available for $10. No seller spaces are available for yard sale.
Coffee and doughnuts will be available.
Upon request, boat safety inspections will be conducted by the North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron if attendees trailer their boat to the event. The squadron is empowered to affix a 2014 safety decal to compliant vessels.

Landing practices
COUPEVILLE — Officials have identified several key dates in support of community events this summer when there are no scheduled landing practice operations at the Coupeville landing field.
No practices are planned for Saturday through Monday; July 4, 5 and 6 for the extended Independence Day weekend; and Aug. 8, 9 and 10 for Coupeville’s Arts and Crafts Festival.
Base officials worked with Mayor Nancy Conard and District Commissioner Helen-Price Johnson to look for key times over the summer when the Navy would not use the landing field.
Weekends typically do not have scheduled flight operations, and officials do not see a current reason to alter that practice.
PT used-book sale
PORT TOWNSEND — The Friends of the Port Townsend Library will hold their annual spring used-book and media sale at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St., on Saturday.
The sale opens at 8 a.m. for Friends members and 9 a.m. for the general public. It ends at 3 p.m.
Gently used books, CDs and DVDs for adults and children will be available.
Except for specially priced books, all adult items will cost $1 and children’s books 50 cents.
Starting at 1 p.m., bags of books will sell for $2.50.
