NEWS BRIEFS: Volunteers sought for fish surveys … and other items

PORT HADLOCK — The North Olympic Salmon Coalition is seeking volunteers to conduct coho salmon surveys on Chimacum Creek.

Volunteers should be able to commit to three to four hours per week through January.

Survey volunteers will walk sections of the creek during the coho run,

counting live and dead fish and recording spawning nests.

The data helps the state Department of Fish and Wildlife estimate the number of salmon returning to Chimacum Creek.

The Salmon Coalition provides all necessary gear and survey equipment.

No prior experience is needed, but volunteers must be physically able to hike through the woods in somewhat challenging conditions, often negotiating logs and fallen debris.

Interested volunteers should attend training from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the WSU Extension Office in Jefferson County, 121 Oak Bay Road.

Volunteers are asked to RSVP online at www.nosc.org by clicking on the Latest Events tab.

For more information, call Hannah Seligmann at 360-504-5611 or email hseligmann@nosc.org.

It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
