PORT ANGELES — Math will remain a focus for improvement, North Olympic Peninsula school administrators said after Washington Assessment of Student Learning test results were released on Tuesday.
The percentages of students passing represent the students achieving level three or level four on the test.
Those achieving only level one or level two did not pass.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean that a student has to get only 50 percent of the test correct, said Port Townsend Superintendent Tom Opstad.
Different questions might represent a different number of points, and the score places students in one of the four levels, he said.
Although the test is one measure developed by the state, it isn’t the only way schools measure progress, said Port Angeles School Board President Cindy Kelly.
“While the WASL is one component of No Child Left Behind, we know that there are many other components that develop each of our students in the state of Washington, and we must keep our eyes on the education of the whole student,” Kelly said.
