CLALLAM BAY — Cape Flattery School District will be laying off teachers to off set a projected $100,000 budget shortfall for fiscal 2002-2003.
District officials said Thursday that teacher cuts will come at both Clallam Bay and Neah Bay schools.
“A few years ago, we inflated our teaching staff to reduce class sizes to improve academics,” Superintendent Gene Laes said. “We are way above the state allocation and our enrollment declines make cuts necessary.
“One teacher at Clallam Bay has been cut — her position was eliminated because of low enrollment,” he said. “Probably two staff members at Neah Bay will be reduced.”
Cape Flattery is the second West End school district to announce teacher cuts this week.
On Tuesday, the Quillayute Valley School Board in Forks announced the pending layoffs of nine teachers.
